Have been in a party with a character who only knew alchemy so they could boost up their numbers and acted like a complete murder-hobo. 

In this instance, however, they weren't really just a murder-hobo. We knew the player; they don't like murder-hobos and are heavy into roleplay. Turned out their character was a former paladin who had fought, and failed, to prevent the death of their god. To torment them, the evil god who slew theirs turned the character immortal so they couldn't kill themselves or allow themselves to be killed, but had to exist forever with their failure. Realizing this, they turned to heavy drug addition in order to endure their continued existence, waiting until they became so immune to their constant boosting that the herbs, potions, and booze no longer had any effect and went insane as they were forced to fully face reality once more, or successfully found a way to end their immortal existence and join their god in nonexistent oblivion. 

Ended up replacing their fallen god, getting their stolen power and the power of the god's slayer, and taking the god's place in the heavenly pantheon thanks to the help of the party.
